Fitzroy Crossing to Derby

Next morning we took to the highway once again this time towards Derby, we are now getting closer to the coast at last, making a few touristy stops along the way.

We made a stop at The Boab Tree rest area, the highlight of this particular rest stop was the huge Boab Tree in the centre - another great photo opportunity.

Several things struck us about today's drive, including:
- Cattle - there were lots of cattle along the road today, although very little roadkill, they must breed smarter cattle up here.
- Ant Hills - the termite hills here were very different to what we had been seeing, they all looked like dinosaur droppings!

This termite mound was over 2 metres tall

- Roadworks - there was plenty of activity on the roads - taxpayers money at work
- Single Lane Bridges - we crossed over several single lane bridges, fortunately we didn't encounter any roadtrains as we approached.

Fortunately there was nothing coming

Next stop was at The Boab Prison Tree just outside of Derby.

The Boab Prison Tree is a large hollow Adansonia Gregorii (Boab) tree.

Evidence indicates that police on patrol from Wyndham in the 1890's noticed that holes in the upper branches indicated that the tree was hollow and so they cut an opening into the tree to use as a lock-up for indigenous Australian prisoners on their way to sentencing. It is reported that it accommodated up to 30 prisoners at one time.

4 evil looking prisoners

A very horrible place to be, imagine 30 prisoners in here

On to Derby, to the Kimberley Entrance Caravan Park and then straight down to the wharf to see the sunset.
Derby Sunset on the wharf - not sure who the people are though
